Professor Rahman was born in 1944 in the village named Chakkarim in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur district. His father name is late Alhaz Fahim Uddin Ahmed and Mother name is Late Begum Mosiron Nesa. After completing his primary education at Chakkarim Primary School, he completed Matriculation Examinations from Pirganj High School in Rangpur district in 1960 and Intermediate Examinations from Rangpur Carmichael College in 1948. He then obtained his B.Sc. (Hons) degree in 1965 and M.Sc. degree in 1966 in Physics from Rajshahi University. He completed another M.Sc. in 1972 and his then Ph.D. in 1976 from the Dept of Electronic and Electrical Engineering of Loughborough University, England. He achieved exemplary good results in all levels during his student life.
